PROJECT42

Project42 is a film inspired interactive experience, taking inspiration from The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

ABOUT THE FILM

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a science fiction comedy film based on the book series of the same name. In the film, Arthur Dent, an ordinary Englishman, finds himself escaping Earth just moments before its destruction by the Vogons, a bureaucratic and emotionless alien race. He joins his friend Ford Perfect, an alien who has been posing as a human for 15 years while gathering information for the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", a guidebook for intergalactic hitchhikers.

THE CONCEPT

The film humorously and lightly combines into its plot essential questions about existence, the meaning of life, creation, and the entire universe. I wanted to connect the fictional world of the film to our reality. I thought about a research group called Project 42:
A research group that combines philosophers and scientists in the search for the ultimate existential questions and their answers. While developing the concept, I realized that part of the interest in these questions and wonderings is the search itself and the journey. I wanted to design a website and experience that would allude to the scientific and analytical worlds but incorporate the inquisitive nature of these questions and the "journey" experience associated with them, as well as the fun and color expressed in the film.

RESEARCH

In the research process I crafted two persona who felt as the best suited users for my website. I also gathered visual references.

USER EXPERIENCE AND DESIGN

Content Tone: Starts serious and realistic, transitioning to connect with the film's humor and fictional world.
Message: Emphasizes the research journey and exploration over definitive answers.
Interactive Element: An infinite-scrolling "star map" visualizes the ongoing questioning process.

Visual Style: Inspired by science, space, and "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" film's rich, saturated colors.
Typography:
Uses fonts with scientific connotations, breaking the grid for a dynamic and playful feel.
Layout:
Juxtaposes a straight grid (science, precision) with misaligned elements (playfulness) to create visual tension.

Adapting elements for responsive design: Logo, navigation (desktop: navbar, mobile: sidebar/menu), sections, and graphic elements.
