Temple meditation is a branding project for an event inspired by a short story by Haroki Murakami.
The brief was to come up with an event, based on an association, or feeling from a short story.
I chose a short story by Haroki Murakami, describing the stream of thought of a young man passing a woman on the streets of Tokyo. He is convinced that she is 100% perfect for him. The feeling that I got from this story, was more the feeling of the man's over-thinking mind, his inability to take action because of his over-thinking.
I came up with the idea to create a Zen Meditation event taking place in Tokyo. For the posters I wanted to give the feeling of Japanese ink paintings, but to contrast the minimalistic feel expected from that style and the association to meditation by creating a more intense composition, giving that hint of the over-thinking experience. The images created with the brush strokes are an abstract image relating to a selected quote from the story (each poster features a different quote).
The purpose of the brief was to create a design system that works on 3 different formats:
posters, motion poster and an event program.
